UK-based mobile operator 3 is offering mobile apps through a partnership with app portal GetJar. The deal, which was signed for undisclosed terms, will give 3 customers access to GetJar's most popular free apps. These include Google Maps for Mobile, email and internet portal Yahoo!Go, and mobile video app MyWaves.
GetJar was founded in 2004 and is based in the UK and Lithuania. The site hosts more than 10,000 free applications and claims 14m downloads per month. Apps, games and software can be browsed by device or platform, with a new category for Android apps to launching later this year.
"GetJar's huge library of mobile applications will play a crucial role in satisfying customer demand and driving revenue for 3," claims GetJar founder and CEO Ilja Laurs.
The move comes two months after 3 said it wanted to double its customer base to 6.8m by 2012. Speaking to the Financial Times,CEO Kevin Russell said he wants to expand the business after spending a year cutting costs.
In July Apple launched its App Store to coincide with the release of the iPhone 3G. Since then, both T-Mobile and Microsoft are rumoured to be developing similar app stores, while Google has said it will launch an Android app store to support the release of its mobile operating platform.
