Thanks for your comment, but you seem to be confusing technologies with their investment prospects. Landis -- and you -- obviously have been seduced by the various better mousetraps coming along to try to make solar energy and other renewables more commercially viable.

As a portfolio manager, Landis invests in the companies that are developing these technologies because he believes they will provide strong long-run returns. Before buying shares in any of the companies he holds, you and other investors should study up, run the numbers and see if you reach the same conclusion.
The United States Southwest (New Mexico, Arizonia, Nevada and California) is excellent for solar power having deserts which are flat and cloudless most of the year. Your right if the solar cell are made more efficent, this could be a potential source for meeting some of our energy needs.
Another mechanism for solar power is using reflectors to capture solar energy and transforming it into electricity. Such as directing solar reflection to towers where it is captured as heat and provides energy for electricity producing turbines; some of the heat could be stored for producing electricity during the night. Solar cells do not have the capacity for night electricity.
Other reflectors such as reflective troughs are being explored for converting solar into heat which could be converted into electricity. You seem to have neglected this emerging technology.

Long term, the stock market should move higher. But short
term is likely going lower.

But how can an investor figure out the trends and be able to
profit from them? After all, the "buy and hold" easy strategy
is dead.

I believe the answer is through stock market timing signals.

Consider http://invetrics.com

Its daily DJIA index trading signal is up a respectable 65% for
the year (as of October 29, 2009) and it is free of charge for
individual investors.

Thanks, but I think there are good reasons for believing that the correction has already begun. Here's what I said recently on the subject:

http://moneywatch.bnet.com/investing/blog/against-grain/awful-week-for-stocks-may-be-just-the-beginning/311/?tag=col1;newer-post
Conrad, I think you are right on. We are postponed until the end of the year. We will keep seeing the SPY & QQQQ growing or at least not moving down until the fund managers may record huge profits for the year in their books. It will come though!
Excellent article. It points out the fact that we have extreme
bullishness at this time in the market.

One way to figure out the right time to sell is by watching
market timing signals. When they start flashing "Sell" you
know the smart money is getting out. And when they flash
"Buy" again, you know it is time to get in.

That way, one can take advantage of the market move in
either direction by just going with the flow.

P.S.
I get my timing signals at http://invetrics.com

I'm not sure why you bring up the dollar, but as I've said in previous posts, it seems ready for a big recovery. I wouldn't worry about prices going up -- the cost of living has fallen 4% in the last year.
One of the more pressing concerns I have is that the big jar of quarters I have in my office, it has maybe about $90 in it, will not even get me a slice of bologna in a few years due to dollar devaluation.

When imports are insanely expensive, and domestic products are all we have, this will have consequences.

I wasn't saying that deflation is in our future. I was saying it's in our present. My second piece noted that consumer prices are falling at a pace not seen at least since the days of Ike and the hula-hoop. Money supply, to which you referred, has experienced much slower growth lately and even gone negative -- as the Fed was printing all those dollars. People who use money creation as a rationale for predicting inflaiton often forget about all the money that has vanished into thin air through debt write-offs and reduced values on real estate and stocks. You can't factor one side of the ledger in and ignore the other.
