Any suggestions for a situation where the nonperforming colleague is the supervisor? This person has the authority to short circuit the efforts of any underlings, including me. I've pretty much come to the realization that the only way they will address my boss's incompetence is by discontinuing our entire program. Is jumping ship before that happens my only alternative?

If your boss doesn't like you, why are you in no danger of losing your job--being fired? Because some others in the company seem to value you? The only thing that matters is your boss, who has hiring/firing power over you.

I'd suggest you transfer out of your unit. That's the best way to neutralize her. You have no idea what is going on in that little mind of hers, and if the going gets tough in your organization or company-wide, dumping you in the street may be viewed by your boss as part of the solution.

That is very very common. I have seen some, experience such many times.

When you get a very individualistic, sadistic and egoistic boss, the situation gets even more challenging to manage.

You have a contradiction on hand. On the one hand you want your ideas to influence your boss's decision, yet you do not want him to exploit you totally (before you get too protective, some exploitation/ pilferage, is inevitable). The best things to do is to learn how to be one step ahead.

Remember, all ideas are really just IDEAS (if you take the word, all ideas are just 'ideals' in reality. You came up with the idea, so the boss will be one step behind you in terms of application of the ideas, or implementation of the idea-solution. in reality you are naturally always one step ahead.

What I am also saying is that you should work on the next step - beyond the idea. So even if your idea is 'stolen' it is really good, for the 'thief' must need help to manage the idea, the 'thief' needs to compute the limitations of the idea, the parameters to manage, the time frame, etc.

So the only way to prevent pilferage is really to manage the 'thief'. Microsoft knows that WINDOWs is always being stolen; and I suspect, they came up with the concept of 'upgrades' so when you steal, you need to register to update. That is where they get you!

I too was in this situation and I agee completely with letting others be aware of your ideas. I had the dis-pleasure of working with this boss before, so knew that it was his style to steal ideas from anywhere he could. I documented all of my ideas and suggestion on projects within our unit and passed them on to another trusted manager within the unit.

When his manager began to question his performance because he even stole ideas from those above him, I was able to provide proof that the ideas were mine.
He has been re-assigned, much to my relief.

I would never give him an idea and ask for a favor, he would use it to stab me in the back.

Not agreed on straight forward asking Boss for tangible return. Give all credit to Boss for the "Idea". This will reinforce the relationship between both of you. This for sure will give return in future. With due course of time make him completly dependent on you or abide to your suggestion. You are going to become boss behind the curtain.

Cascading the ownership of idea will lead to head on collision with Boss.

Inspite this try to encash the opportunity for climbing up the ladder directly or indirectly. Management wont like bypassing the hierarchy.

Without goodfaith and recommendation of Boss you wont be able to get anything tangible or intangible.

Plan ahead as early as possible because you never know what will happen. I went on maternity leave 5 weeks earlier than I had anticipated. Luckily I had a few things in place, but I wished I had been more thorough. Keeping in touch while I was gone was helpful.

When 2 of my team members were scheduled to go on maternity leave, I asked them to create a plan about 6-7 weeks before they were supposed to leave. Since we are a very project-based team, it worked fine for us.

In my opinion of you were a respected and desireable employee who delivered, your employer will be even more thrilled to have you back, especially if you tied up all the loose ends and put a plan to keep things running when you left.

Think about how hard employers work to recruit a person like this; and they still take a chance as they don't know the person. If you are the worker they need and want (and already know because you have proven yourself) why would they not be thrilled to have you back?

I was on maternity leave for 4 months; it seemed like forever, I didn't check in much while I was gone (I was so busy! Although I knew how it was going). It was a period of project flux, and when I came back there was a new project waiting for me as opposed to being "left out".

The best way to ensure they want you back, is to be a person they want back. And if the organisation can't manage around a planned absence such as this, that is a whole other situation that needs to be assessed.

This is one of those tough and even troubling situations. Too many times, when the person gets back from maternity leave, situations change; new clients come in, old clients go away, new people are hired, others are gone, divisions move, management may change, direction of business transforms and on and on.

I agree you must stay in contact. The more work you can do while away, the better. Others who take your place often feel put off when you come back as they've done work which could be rewarded yet they're sent back to their old job, creating dissension.

Clients can be put off as they might have built a relationship. Employer may want to alter and modify workforce and has to somehow work you in. Do be prepared to be passed over for projects etc.

There's ways to handle maternity leave but no good ways. Its one of those situations that's tough and not easy.

Well it depends if it has to be "My Ideas." If so good luck with that. However if one does not care about who gets credit for the idea than the chances of success are much greater. I have had bosses running down the hall in anticipation ready to tell the president or Ceo about their great idea (sometimes the idea does loose a little bit in translation though). It takes a little more creativity to make your boss and others believe it is their idea and there is a technique to this but once mastered, one will find one's ideas sprouting up all over the place. A co-worker found my advice worked amazingly on her former boss. She is now the VP and head of the department.
