You are right about the change. BUT, the new upgrade policy does not apply to UALs ps product from lax/sfo to JFK. The punishes all 1k who fly cross-continental every week. I will have to change to a different airline.
Moreover, UAL made the chance so late in the year that it is impossible to earn status on other airlines before the end of the year, therefore trying to log me into UAL.

Very bad business practice. After more than 18 years on UAL I will have to leave the program.

Hmm, so does this mean that they're drastically downsizing the charter
division? To me this seems like they're undiversifying instead of
diversifying.

I found your thoughts on Atlantic Southeast very interesting. On March 30 I was on an IAH-ATL fight on Atlantic Southeast that was cancelled in late morning. Delta had three flights during afternoon hours and folks with Delta tickets were put on those flights. Folks with Atlantic Southeast tickets were put on an 8 pm flight and treated like they had swine flu. (I got one meal voucher even though we were were there for 10 hours and given the run around). I complained in writing to Delta and weeks later was given a voucher. My thoughts are Delta is giving "the business" to Atlantic Southeast.

As an ASA employee, I can tell you that it is not the fault of ASA. Great article. I'm glad someone finally understands the real issue. One other bullet point you may want to add is that ASA operates nearly 800 flights a day out of one hub. That hub being the world's busiest airport, KATL. With that being said, it is pretty remarkable that we operate as many flights on-time as we do.

It can still be pretty much an all inclusive
Here is what is included and what is not from the Royal Caribbean website:
Included: Shipboard accommodations, ocean transportation, most meals, some beverages and most onboard entertainment.

Not Included: Air transportation**; transfers**; items of a personal nature, such as shore & land excursions**, specialty restaurant fees, some beverages, photographs, gratuities/service fees, medical services, etc.

The "not included" are basically identicle to all other cruise lines

RE: Capacity Restraint Leads to Fewer Empty Airline Seats in October

Brett's "brief refresher on how the airline industry measures capacity and demand" is instructive for the students of tourism management. However, when presenting "what we had" for October, the percent change for ASM and RPM is a very different measure than what was described in the previous definitions.

To be instructive to students, Brett should have indicated that these are % changes and that they were calculated from the previous month or from the previous October. Finally, as defined by Brett, the Load Factor is a percentage. What is reported seems to be again the change in percentage points rather than actual LFs as labeled. I'm also not sure why accounting protocol was used for the ASM and RPM values while standard + - were used on the Load Factors. A reader shouldn't need to work this hard to understand a table of numbers.

I had the same reaction when I saw the spin-doctor over-hyped
announcement from USAir. Do they really think that an
executive who racks up 50-100K miles/year is that stupid to not
be able to see what they are doing in raising award levels????

Add to the already downward spiral: The City of LA in their infinite wisdom, just raised the Living Wage to $3.25 to $14.50 per hour. Why do I care, because ONT is part of LAWA, which is the City of Los Angeles. All employers at ONT will have to raise their hourly rates to the new $14.50. That's a 28% increase!

This will mean more layoffs at ONT, higher ticket prices, less people flying out of ONT because of the higher prices, let passengers to spread the already high costs over....you get the picture.

It's looking really dark here at ONT.

(BTW-I manage an airline operation at ONT)

I guess they're looking to capture some of Continental's oil industry traffic from Houston now that they're part of the Star Alliance. But it'll be hard to fill a 777 and a 767 with only 3 daily CAL Express RJ flights from IAH to Dulles. Maybe they're hoping each of those RJ passengers is upgrading to a business class seat when they connect to Africa or the Middle East...
