Nobody should embrace new taxes. We are taxed enough. There are two disturbing comments from the writer: The first is the conclusion that embracing taxation provides lobbyist clout. Lobbyist are the reason that the government is so far out of touch with the people who pay their fares. Special interest groups present themselves as the grass roots norm, when they are vulcanizing entities. The second disturbing comment is that the tax will help healthcare for the masses. For the good of all? Marxist logic has proven to be a failure in all previous attempts, and yet the writer suggests better this time around on the backs of those able to afford what they want. From a civil liberties perspective, the government confiscates when in need and ignores the rules that founded this great nation. The notion that opposition to taxation based upon the label of luxury or otherwise as being ludicrous is typical name toss by those who protest too much.

The problem with Cancer (and I'm sure we've heard this before) is that its largely a syndrome with a potential for multi-path progression (and I'm not even hinting at Metastasis). The reason people prefer vitamins etc is that the 'spin doctors' do a great job of 'muscling up' something that most people have been trusting as kids....Imagine being hit with cancer, learning of its fearsome lethality and then, having no real supportb system to speak of. The clock, as you know it, is ticking.....you know it and in desperation you turn to whatever you trusted all your life - Multivitamins fit the bill like nothing else does. Plus, there's costs!

I took great offense to this article also.....while black humor has it's place in the world, I DO NOT see it's place in life and death! Obviously the replies I have read here are by people that either don't know anything about living with Hepatitis C, treating it or dying from it.....

The wise ass comment made about the miss-spelling of Ms. Morrison's name was very uncalled for....but expected, common side affects of Hep C and also of Treatment are brain fog, no concentration, confusion, cognitive problems and depression. So, my reply to the person who made the comment is: you are like most of the ignorant ******** I have met on my journey of Hep C since 1994....

While I appreciate your apology Ms. Morrison, it is my hope in the future that you and your editor can do a better job at helping us than adding to the already miserable misinformation that circulates out in the real world. And yes.. I could make my own yellow page book with the listings of all the suck Doctors I have been to thus far...

As for the Editor....I thought your comments were even more reprehencible than Ms. Morrison's so called joke...If I make a joke about Hep C, treating it or dying from it...it is usually to someone that also has it, they have walked in my shoes.

Do you folks here also make crude humor about women having there breast's cut off because of breast cancer or maybe that thier vagina's wither up and dry out do to chemotherapy, thus deeming them shriveled twat's? I would be interested in reading some of those articles as well.

I'm a female, age 51, diagnosed in 1994 at the age of 37, I have chronic Hep C with stage 3 fibrosis, since being diagnosed with Hep C, I have been diagnosed with Severe Osteo Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, + Rhumatoid Arthritis, Chronic Ulcers and Migrain Headaches, I also have no immune sytem left. I'm on my 3rd treatment of INF/RIBA (9 mths into an 18 mth treatment), and yes if I sound angry it may be do to the RIBA RAGE we get do to the Ribavarin, I run between suicide and homicide these days....oh....sorry.....that was my black humor for the day!

Until you have walked in my shoes...don't assume anything is funny....because we are DYING out here!

You see the same thing with the tobacco industry (http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/31/weekinreview/31saul.html?em) but I don't know if acceptance of brothels and a softer stance on cancer-sticks (less aggressive anti-smoking campaigns) is the same as cosmetic procedures. With those two, both sure can use some political influence, but not sure what Allergan can gain from that, or if what little influence it does get is greater than the cost of the tax.
-April L

Of coarse they want everyone to have one! It's called a business. What is the big deal? It helps medics, etc get your records FAST in case of an emergency. It's "information" you can't lose (great for the elderly). I think we need to worry about things like mind control, invasion of privacy, etc before something that's "helpful & not harmful" is judged so critically. Using something like this doesn't make us any less human. And, for all you people who say it's not they way God wanted us to live, think of this: It doesn't give you special powers like strength, x-ray vision, etc... it is the sized of a couple grains of rice... yes, it is artificial, but about 80% of us have some kind of artificial "something" in/on us right now. Your dentures are artificial, how about your fillings, how about the electrodes that are implanted to ease Parkinson's Disease, pace maker, just to mention a FEW.??? Really think about it. We are not even 100% ourself once we get a kidney or any other kind of transplant. Part of someone else is now inside of us. But guess what? It's keeping us alive to still see our family, friends, & what so much God Almighty has given us to be thankful for: some of which is DOCTORS & SCIENTISTS (who God gave those talents to) who have improved our lives for the good. Have a Happy Thanksgiving! God Bless!

Re: "Did anyone not know that Pitts works for both PN and CMPI?" (above).
-----------------
Apparently yes, Jim. Many people did not know that Peter Pitts, who presents himself as a "former FDA official," also has a role with a public relations company.

Our show, The Infinite Mind, had Pitts on the air in 2008, as a former FDA official discussing the fact that Sen. Charles Grassley had pushed through an FDA "black box" warning on anti-depressants, in the absence of solid scientific evidence.

We were not aware at the time of Pitts' PR connections, and failed to mention them on the air. Pitts' critics had a field day, even though, as I pointed out at the time, we were not alone: PBS' NewsHour and NPR also had Pitts on the air, and were also apparently unaware of his PR ties.

Now, Pitts' PR connection is reported again as news, including last night on Rachel Maddow's MSNBC show. So to answer your question, yes, Jim, lots of people don't know that Pitts works for a non-profit advocacy group, and a PR company.

We did not know it 18 months ago when The Infinite Mind was attacked for it, although Jeanne Lenzer at Slate, Philip Dawdy at Furious Seasons, and the other self-appointed "psychiatry critics" with ready access to blogs, had fun throwing mud, anyway. (At least you and BNET set the record straight: http://bit.ly/8lAi6S )
