Yes, decades ago D&B could put together fairly decent reports on private companies but nowadays, there is *so* much information from so many diverse sources that it is extremely difficult to obtain to-notch information. I'd say to check out the longer Demo of InsideView or contact the company to see how it works...I didn't check on private companies when I demo'd it.

My biggest frustration with legacy business sources is that it is so hard to get info on private companies. (Not their fault that disclosure requirements for private are so much looser than public companies, but it's a problem for me.) Most of the companies in the businesses I track are private - either kind of small, or owned by private equity companies. Can InsideView do a better job with unearthing this data?

No, because I am an old-style journalist, I don't participate in contests or accept gifts when offered. I just write what I think. I'm sure someone much more appropriate will win that opportunity.

"80 percent of consumers recently surveyed by Forrester Research say they would discontinue their favorite free print content if they were asked to pay for it. Less than 10 percent of respondents would agree to subscription models; only three percent would opt for micropayments."
That sounds about right. With all the free options out there to keep up with current events, why would someone pay money for the same news that's available for free? And with all these services that are available for free on mobile that provide more than just news, I'd never drop a dime on print-gone-online.
A great solution I recommend is our startup, http://www.YourVersion.com. When I'm on my hour-long commute on the CalTrain, I use YourVersion (it's a real-time discovery engine) on my iPhone (free, of course). I have my bookmarked content I've discovered through the service (blogs, mainstream news articles, tweets) and then I go through them on the road.
It also has the social element built in, where I can share (tweets, facebook, or email) content that I discover. I highly recommend the service on the browser and on mobile. I've discovered tons of new content that I wouldn't ordinarily have found, and hey, it's all been free.

Thanks for the post! And let us know what you think of YourVersion.
-Melody

I probably should have take this a moment to qualify the statement "non-partisan". It's a relative term. If you were to sketch this out, Fox News would be to the far right, MSNBC would be to the far left, and CNN would be in the middle, but leaning left. Compared to either of them, however, it's decidedly middle of the road.
thanks for commenting.

Cathy

If you think CNN is unbiased, you are a liberal.
We all tend to see those opinions and stories that we disagree with as biased.

Fox News is doing very well because it is in tune with the majority of Americans (40% report being conservative, 20% liberal), whether or not the liberals like it. Most of the journalists in this country are liberal. Therefore, most of the "news" takes on a liberal spin. Viewing the same story through a conservative lens does not make it any less authentic news or journalism.

At Ace SEO & Web Design we have also discovered that our clients who have videos on their web pages do much better than those that do not. We theorize that this is because of the tracking that Google, Yahoo and Bing do.

We believe that they are tracking how long a visitor spends on a page and they longer they spend the more relevant that page is to the search phrase. And since people are more likely to watch videos than read text, visitors spend more time on the page.

However, we have also determine that auto-play videos are much more effective than those that visitors have to click on to start.

A read a few pieces by this writer (another..yea I'm a Democrat, but I am open minded). Fox News (the news part, not the commentary) is no more bigoted than CNN; each is partisan less in their coverage of a story as in what they decide to cover. But SO WHAT. There is no such thing as non-partisan, nor has there ever been. I love advocacy journalism. IT IS AMERICAN AS APPLE PIE. Always has been.

Hey Rush,

Really not quite sure where you get the idea that I think newspapers should give away their content. The problem is that that cat is out of the bag. We've all been taught that online newspaper content should be free. Sad, but true.To wit:

http://industry.bnet.com/media/1000907/the-problems-with-walter-isaacsons-newspaper-rescue-plan/

As online video is still young, compared to online newspapers, maybe there's a chance that people will learn to pay for it. (I did an extensive comment on this after another one of your comments, so I'm not going to go into great detail here.)

In addition, most print news is a commodity. Video, particularly entertainment video, less so. If you want to watch "Seinfeld" you want to watch "Seinfeld". You're not going to shrug your shoulders and say, oh well..."Seinfeld" is charging so I guess I'll go watch "Full House."

As for me and my colleague David Weir, we think independently, which is part of the fun of having multiple people on this blog. How boring it would be if we agreed on everything.

Cathy
