    So much for ethics...

    I disagree entirely. The author seems to have forgotten a basic principle of managing layoffs - that those who are left watch very carefully how you handle those who are leaving. If anyone is going to steal sensitive documents they would have done it by now. Take the risk - treat those who are leaving with sensitivity, and the symbolic stance you take will be rewarded later by renewed respect from other employees. Treat those who are leaving brutally, and everyone else will see it as a "carte blanche" to get away with whatever they can while they can - after all, why not when what awaits them at the end is a security company escorting them off the premises?

    This author has also confused "being nice" with ethical treatment of employees. They are simply not the same thing. Most people take bad news well if it is handled directly and honestly.
