    Yes it is!

Agreed! Not utilizing the tools of social networking only
pushes you further from the circle. Simply look at the
statistics on the increasing popularity of social networks
(the fun and the professional)! All of them show the
    booming success of social networks.

I am not sure if they will ever burn out, but they are here
with notable presence right now so you might as well
    make efficient use of them!

I disagree. Social networking is fine and useful but the effects seem to be exagerated. I for one quit Orkut and am pretty much inactive in Facebook because I am not interested in which cities my friends are visiting or whom they are dating!! I go there to find old friends or connect to some people through my friends to do stuff and this happens once in a while!
Let's not forget that social networking websites are not for fun for their founders, they are for them to make money and you can see how difficult it is from reports.

Web 2.0 and social networking...either embrace it whole heartedly or get out of the way. Sure feel free to be left in the dust as other fortune 100 and 500 companies adapt such a technology to address the needs of gen y'ers. As more companies realize that we are entering ( or are in ) a generational shift, the more social networking will become a requirement as part of my job. Today many organizations are decentralizing their workforce...allowing people to work remotely from anywhere at anytime...and the only way to address the need for those kinds of remote employees to feel connected with the company is through some form of social networking.

Lets face it, its likely most employees are engaged in some form of social networking....why not harness that network for the good of the business...what a wonderful incubator for new ideas throughout the company!

It's very sad that Prof. Davenport doesn't seem to understand Web 2.0 social networking. It's so much bigger than Facebook. This is about putting mass communication in the hands of the masses. Sites like Digg, Delicious YouTube and many others exist because of social networking. There's no question that search engines are impacted. There's also proof that business is. Zappos is a shining example. I read that on Twitter, first. Social networking is as much a state of mind as a series of devices. Yes we now each have a printing press and a broadcast station but we're also learning how to use them to advantage. Valuable communication happens with almost unfathomable speed. Of course there's a certain amount of waste that accompanies this volume. I'd wager even Prof. Davenport could start his own niche for anti yapping fans. But he'd be far more successful if he took advantage of Web 2.0

Regrettably, I have to agree with Tom. The writer's case would be more compelling if the Gen Y's Web 2.0 communication content actually moved pass the lowest common denominator exchanges that is just as prevalent on the social networking websites. A vast percentage of the communication is substance free. Telling your friend what you are doing right now and what your last light though was hardly constitutes the level of intellectual power that is going to take our culture to the next level any time soon.
