I agree that the purpose of the party is to reward the employees for their contributions. To eliminate the party is not a good signal to the employees, especially if the workers have been around long enough to be accustomed to having the parties.

@ Enrico: my thoughts exactly. I mean, I know budgets are tight, but will a Costco run and a keg really kill anyone's bottom line?

It's a double edge sword. I agree the party is to reward the employees for their dedication and hard work for the Company. However, in an economy when companies are laying off people and then are throwing a party to reward employees for their dedication and hard work; what does that say about the Company? What about the employees who had to be laid off? They didnt have dedication or didn't work hard enough for the Company?
