RE: How to Play Hooky More Effectively
I have found short holidays from work to be effective. The holiday I speak of is usually more than half an hour, but less than an hour. I have learned from the masters here.
1.) micro wave your coffee to the extreeme and have it put in a cup that will keep it hot for as long as possible then place it next to your keyboard - and off you go to your holiday.
2.) Need for 'research' on nearly any topic and you can mumble the vague discust in having to do this irritating and (time consuming) task despite your busy professional schedule on your - way outa the office for a while. - You can't be successful in finding these things every time you try.
3.) My cube mates have the keen ability to pick up their phones before they even ring calling them on missions so bizare they tempt the fate of the holiday gods forgiveness, but never once has anyone ever been 'caught' on the truant time off for these short holidays.
4.) The list of excuses is infinite, but ultimately thess slackers must find someone to do the work - wait a minute, I think I have found that person and I believe it is me. ooops, forgive me, I just remembered I have a photocopy mission I am doing for someone else who is out for the minute - I should be back in about half an hour unless the copy machine is jammed again.

Better be extra careful if you plan on skiing or other semi-risky sport.

The problem is every one knows and if you are the manager, whether you know it or not, you will be copied and so add to your frustrations.
Strategies for coping with "Down days"
1. Know that it is normal. Healthy emotional behaviour shows a wave pattern.
2. Studies of war time pilots have shown that you make better decisions and are more careful when you are feeling down.
3. Do not try and push yourself into a sustained effort - rather do shorter tasks with break for 5 to 10 minutes between tasks.
4.Know that the feeling is self limiting - you do not have to make it go away (anyway you can't) it will go away by itself.
5.When you have finished your work day give yourself a mental health treat like having a deep warm bath or walking for an hour or reading your favourite book or listening to your favourite music.
6. Read Slacker Manager's blog - Retire now - or at any age. -

Just don't follow the example of my former boss, at a church. He would tell the staff he was going to the hospital or nursing home for a visit. Later, we would hear from the family of the supposed visitee that he hadn't been there in a few weeks. Or, even worse, his golf partner would mention their game.
