RE: A Quarter of Women Report Workplace Discrimination

I've worked in Federal civil service for 23+ years now in the fields of drafting/engineering and now environmental management. I get paid the same as a man would in my same position, so that is not an issue. But where the discrimination comes in is I don't get the same respect that the men do in my office, I get the "other duties" assigned to me, such as taking on the office supply credit card, filekeeping and timekeeping responsibilities when the secretary left. These are little ways I see of discrimination. My second level supervisor actually suggested to me that I might want to add timekeeping to my job description so I would get credit for it. I went to my immediate supervisor and complained how I felt discriminated and put down because as a Program Manager, why would I want secretarial duties added to my job and I felt he wouldn't have asked me that if I were a man. Then the second level supervisor started commenting to my supervior on how long I took for smoke breaks (not on how long the guys took), on how I listened to music while I worked (not on anyone else listening to the radio/music) and so on. It ended up in an ugly EEO case that finally had to go in front of the lawyers for settlement.

Don't kid yourself....it ain't just about money and position. It's about survival and just being about to do the job they pay you to do in peace!!
