In multinational companies where teams are spread over the world and you work on a project with somebody sittng in US and somebody else sitting in INDIA for example. The CHAT is a real boost for prodcutivit.

You can also use the CHAT to check if somebody is able to talk you on the phone for a longer time. If the person is reqlally busy will let you knwo. THis is somethign alsreayd very common in our company.

This article was actually written within the USA context. Here in the Philippines, we even have to prohibit bringing of cell phones in the office, especially in the production areas during office hours because cell phones contribute a lot to loss of productivity.

An insurance company that I used to work for used Yahoo messenger within the metropolitan area that we live in. All the offices were fairly small, so if I was with a client, and a call came in, I would put the call on hold, and message the other offices asking if someone could take the call. Usually there was immediate response from several diffent offices that I could immediately transfer the caller to. Not only did it help with OUR business, it also served to be productive for customer satisfaction. Good call!

RE: Text Messaging Actually Good for Concentration, Study Finds

I don't know if it helps my concentration, especially when messages pop up when I'm working on something. I will say though that I have a boss who is into text messaging - this works really well for both us. He can text instead of call. He typically texts to ask questions or make schedule changes. If I need to schedule a potential client, while that client is on the phone, I can text to see if he can get to their area at the desired time and then put that person on the schedule. So, it actually is a system that works quite well for us.
