Survey: CEO Candor On the (Steep) Decline

Yahoo should be on the list
Candor is indeed an issue among top execs. More often than not these days they are over-controlled by their handlers. Check out Yahoo's Sue Decker in the San Francisco Chronicle today:

Has ever a president said more while saying less?

One or two examples of 'worst' would have made interesting reading.

RE: Survey: CEO Candor On the (Steep) Decline
Is this news or just a recycled press release from a vested interest investor relations firm, Rittenhouse Research. I may be mistaken but this 'factoid' has almost no statistical science or proper method underlying it. There's no benchmark, it's a tiny sample of a few firm amongst the 10,000 plus co's out there - and thus not representative, and the author's credentials are unclear as a bona fide authority on the subject.
Why does BNET put such stuff on the wires. Do real business news or nothing at all. This is USA Today without even an Editor's eye applied to basic fact and authority checking! Lazy work! -

Is it really an unfounded article?
I really hope you're not a CEO because if you are, you really need some serious re-strategizing. We got a pep-talk from our CEO today and I pretty much filtered it out and concentrated primarily on my muffin and fruit. Actually, it was half a muffin and I think it was banana nut with raisins. Funny, I pay more attention to my muffin than I do to the company CEO or to any of the execs when they begin their fancy speeches! Maybe the author isn't too far off from the truth...

When NewsCorp said they would give the WSJ editorial integrity, I stopped listening.

RE: Survey: CEO Candor On the (Steep) Decline
I wonder if the surveys go back far enough to track trends through the econominc cycles? Is there a tie-in to the economic outlook and 'truthiness' of a CEOs report? Are they more foggy during questionable periods than good times, and do the people/companies who are clear in bad times do better?

The trend is not confined to just CEOs
Candor has been lacking in some sections of America's public arena for awhile. When such messages (i.e., confusing, misleading) are used, the intent is to obfuscate, not reveal facts; to deceive, not to enlighten. Evidently, the public at general, and investors in particular, are not trusted to be prudent and use good judgment when making decisions.

Candor on Decline -- and the Sun Will Rise Tomorrow
I?m not sure how they can tell candor is on the decline. It seemed pretty low already. It is unusual to hear comments from anyone in any level of leadership ? corporate, nonprofit, and political --- that isn?t filled with spin.
A major reason why people resist change is that they don?t trust the people leading it. And when you ask people why they don?t trust their leaders, they reply, ?Because you can?t believe what they say.?

in search of the straight dope
On one level, sure, it's no shocker that CEO communication is full of spin. On the other, companies all compete in an era of unprecedented transparency (just look at what has happened to executive compensation the last few years), and smart executives realize that and communicate accordingly. I can't vouch much for the depth of this particular survey, as it seemed to be confined to written communication with shareholders, but it's certainly a reminder that we still have a long ways to go.

Yep, the current PR approach of controlling the message
is just fundamentally flawed. PR 2.0 fixes this and many
more problems with current PR.
