    This is so true - yet so many start-ups have drunk their own Kool-Aid and will not accept anything less than the type of PR results they have enjoyed around a launch or something else of magnitude.

    Nothing is free

    There is a certain amount of risk involved with PR. You can submit press releases on a regular basis but a lot of them will not be picked up. It is great free advertising though. But what of the opportunity cost versus the benefit? Could the time spent creating press releases be better utilized on another project? It depends on the industry and what publications they target. I recently took a Marketing Management course and the importance of PR was discussed. Every company should spend time on it. You can always post PR to your web site and your company blog. I think also that PR is more attuned to your customer and gives you more credibility than like advertising because you did not pay for it.
