Why Journalists Need PR People

    Interdependent, Mutually Beneficial

As a journalist, turned political press secretary, the experience on both sides of the communications business was extremely valuable. The PR person is in the middle and best performs their function when they convey to the person that signs their check, that the person who writes the news is more a customer than an adversary.

Most, not all, but most journalists are interested in both sides of the story; information that helps them give clarity, background, and texture to their readers.

It is part of the reason McCain enjoys a good relationship with the media. He's been straight, thoughtful, and quite frankly less predictable than most Members of Congress. Why? I believe it is because he thinks about the issue, as an issue first and not necessarily about the political points or partisan gain. My understanding is he treats journalists as thoughtful people, not conduits for his message.

It's a odd situation at times, but candor and an understanding of each person's role goes a long way to making the PR/journalist relationship professionally rewarding, an even personally enjoyable.

RE: Why Journalists Need PR People

All thought writers can write they may not know where to find a great story?! PR is there as a director to show the way or what people are thinking and what they may want to hear or see. I am a PR person for someone who is unsung and yet everyone knows who he is?! That person is DR. ERNESTO A. MOSHE MONTGOMERY, The Psychic Spy a member of Mi5 during world war two.
