Should Managers Encourage Healthy Lifestyles?

There is a fine line here...

Recently I was recruited for a job with a higher salary. I went to my boss and explained the rate, noting that I was a bit "underpaid" for the position.

He responded that he had paid for two weeks off of medical leave and that not everyone would have done that.

The job had been one that drastically increased my stress level with working well over the original job expectations.

Needless to say, I decided to take the other offer, feeling that my pay was related to wellness issues.

It's simply unfair to totally stress out one of your employees and then undercut pay due to stress-related illnesses. If it's not illegal, it should be.

It is an interesting question. What about smoking? What programs have been tried to help stop smoking in the company. Bonuses, perk programs, pay for the doctor to help with anti-smoking medications? What if somebody relapses, any consequences? Does the employee go underground and hide their smoking? I am very interested in assisting our people to be healthier, anybody have any suggestions?

Employers should NOT provide a "smoking area" as this only encourages smoking.
