This is right on
It's great to hear these tips and know that there are ways to handle difficult people and situations in the workplace. This should be sent around to all the offices that I've been fortunate enough to become acquainted with! Thanks, Starla!

Finally - Practical Advice
I have attended so many trainings that dance around the issue of office politics. The advice is often so general as to be worthless. Alternatively, the presentations try to create 'personae' that are confusing.
Starla has hit the issue between the eyes. She speaks concretely, gives extremely practical advice as to how to relate in the office well and reminds us that even the most damaging people are human.
We often forget that companies are made up of teams and relationships. Environments where these teams are functional are much more productive and enjoyable. Companies that don't understand or foster this, trend to have less happy employees and fewer good results.
Well done Starla! -

Nice Advice... In Theory
I previously worked in an environment that was so poisoned by office politics in negative behaviors that no matter of professional behavior would have been successful. Unfortunately, the advice provided here is only appropriate if you work in a generally professional environment. If you worked in the place where I used to work, employing these techniques would have simply gotten you chewed up and spit back out. The caveat for this advice should be... "If you work in a typically professional environment, then these techniques may work for you."

pretty superficial information
I am looking for a bit more depth in these videos. First of all, I can't bring myself to believe the presenter, because I am not sure what her credentials were. In today's world, anyone can claim themselves as an expert, and we should be wary of such superficial advise from people who look so young that they may not have enough experience themselves. They say a lot without teaching us much.
A more useful approach could be to deal with situations when these "do the right things" approach doesn't work in an office environment. How would you tackle that? What if there is a nagging coworker in your midst, who seems to be getting away with such behaviour? -

Play it down
I can appreciate your views and I have experienced working with the office bully that nothing you do and the more positive you try to be, the worse they become. For the most part though the video advice was great in helping keep a focus on staying positive despite the odds....not to get caught up in it or let it change your values. Sometimes that is very hard to do given the situation.

office politics
My college is doing market analysis for a certificate program in conflict management/transformation. I suspect that business, not for profit orgs, government units and NGOs all have this problem and all would benefit from better management of office conflict. You seem to be looking for a more solid approach to the subject. Pls tell me more.

How do organizations address this in a formalized fashion? Is there any certification that managers can receive?
