    Abusive Bosses

I found this article very disappointing. Having worked for abusive bosses, I have found that they aren't all that gifted. They have typically gotten to their management positions because they just happened to be the only person available for the job or they bullied their way into it. I have found that abusive bosses act that way because they are insecure and unprofessional. They rape and pillage their way to the top. Truly gifted professionals are well rounded, successful individuals who know how to treat their subordinates and co-workers with respect.

    Somewhere in between

I haven't experienced either the types mentioned in the article or the insecure types. My experience has been something in between those two extremes. Some of the controlling behaviors are probably most common difficulties. Lots of people that gravitate to management do so with a desire to control their environment and don't learn how to let go of that desire of fully control everyone around them.

Studies of the best managers are the ones that are low key. They take responsibility for the failures and give credit for success to their subordinates. Not all bosses at higher levels recognize this behavior as good. This is probably why we don't see many managers following this model of the best manager style. Some do get to the CEO level so there must be something to it.

Who hired the bully and why?

Let's face it. SOMEBODY hired Simon Legree & Captain Bly. Why? Were they hired because their MANNER of doing the work was considered a best practice or because they HID they chosen style?

Don't fix the bad hire, uncover what you need to know about the applicant and hire the best fit. www.JOBFIT.com. Bill

    Abusive Bosses

I've had the boss who not only had no talent but was a tyrant as well. Worst, he was supported by other tyrants above him; no room for moderate voices. Nothing to learn from him or them.

I was then fortunate enough to have a woman boss who is not only talented, but is also reflective. She thrives on those that she supervises, allowing the team to be creative problem solvers while encouraging cohesion.

I'd like to know if factors such as race or gender make a difference.

I make much less money than I did with the tyrants, but boy am I happier - I mean much, much happier.
