    Justifying a bonus/raise

I'd be willing to bet that when most people approach negotitating, they find it challenging to come up with specific examples that justify why they should receive a higher salary or bonus. Deepak mentioned some of the typical examples a sales rep would give (i.e., kudos from customers' e-mails, direct contribution to revenue or sales growth, etc.).

However, what if your position doesn't contribute to the company's bottom line (i.e. HR) or there is no bottom line (nonprofit organization). I"m curious to know what are some examples other people have used to justify getting a raise or bonus?

Gain as much information from the "opposition" as possible. Step away and strategize. Plan for the worst possible case scenario and all goes along with it but shoot for the best possible case scenario as a target.
