Business Hacks Poll: What Do You Think of 'Windows 7'?

RE: Business Hacks Poll: What Do You Think of 'Windows 7'?
Perhaps Microsoft can come up with a proper successor to XP this time. One can only hope that they learned their lesson from the disaster that ensued when they tried to build an OS on the cheap, offshore. C'mon folks, you can afford to do it right! Please!
While they're at it, operating system user interfaces generally have included the option of reverting to the prior interface. Would it be too much trouble to give the same option to Word, Excel, and the other members of the Office 2007 family. Some of the changes were OK, particularly in Excel. Some, however, were clearly counterproductive -- clearly inappropriate in "Productivity" software. -

I "closed" my Windows six months ago and bought an iMac. Love it. Unloaded a lot of annoyance. 'Nuff said.

Windows Names
Well, Mac seems to have the corner on OS names related to large cats, so why doesn't Microsoft try something else in the animal kingdom? Or maybe name Windows after birds or something, particularly the flightless kind. Try:
Windows Ostrich
Windows Bluebird
Windows Heron
Windows Albatross
Windows Bushtit (Yes, it's a bird, look it up...)
Then they can have an ad campaign asking if you heard the word about the newest Windows? Oh you haven't? It was my understanding that everybody has heard that the bird, bird, bird, the bird is the word. Bbbb-bird, bird, bird, the bird is the word. Bbbb-bird, bird, bird, the bird is the word... -

They can call it whatever they want, that won't make it work better. Maybe a little less concern with the name and more time spent perfecting the operating sysstem. Now there's an idea. Oh, BTW, go back and spend some time fixing VISTA!

RE: Business Hacks Poll: What Do You Think of 'Windows 7'?
Naming it Windows 7 sure as heck won't do anything to improve the "Windows" brand image. As pretty much anyone can guess, the new OS will undoubtedly be as bad as the previous one (or 2 or 3).
Even the average home-user hack (like me) now realises that the cheaper purchase price of a PC running Windows no longer represents value in the face of the inevitable crashes, bugs, etc. inherent with their OS. I'm doing the sensible thing and getting a mac. -

RE: Business Hacks Poll: What Do You Think of 'Windows 7'?
Just have to share a couple Vista horror stories. First, I tried installing the 60-day trial of Office 2007 -- and Outlook flat out would not run. Kept getting an error message on launch.
Then, yesterday, I tried installing Windows Live Messenger, and the installer gave me an error.
Even Microsoft's own products won't run in Vista! I tend to defend the OS as more stable and secure than XP, but stuff like this drives me absolutely insane.
Oh, and the Vista machines on my network can't "see" my XP system. To quote Gob Bluth: Come on! -

RE: Business Hacks Poll: What Do You Think of 'Windows 7'?
I hope "Windows 7" isn't designed by the folks that named it as by my count it will actually be the 9th iteration of Windows. Count 'em: Windows, Win 95, Win 98, Win ME, Win NT, Win 2000, Win XP, Vista and 7 (?!!!). I'm busy making sure that all the folks I support have XP on their new systems so that they'll be able to last the next 3 years or so until whatever MS comes out with has stabilized. I've also decided to expand my service offerings to cover MACs as it is a growth sector fueled by Vista!!!

Hmm...
I remember the "good ole days" when you popped into your office and flipped the switch on your old XT and took a coffee break while it booted.
Now, I pop into my office in 2008 and flip the switch on my PC with XP and go get coffee while it boots.
What really matters to me has always been productivity. The dang computer is a tool and I work them hard. I expect them to run, not crash, not bog down, and not lose stuff. I expect that everything I create is still there the next time, and that what I design will remain as I designed it. XP was a measure of improvement in my expectations although never perfect. I still don't like the direction MS went on Office menus because I can't take the time to break the learning curve on where things are. Its really, really stupid. I am not sure what executive signed off on that idea.
But then I still like WordPerfect way better than Word anyway. It still works better, outlines better, tables better, and documents better. I use Excel and Quattro Pro as well. I am still having data loss issues with Excel even in version 2003 and the file saving when you have multiple spreadsheet files open was designed by an idiot.
Windows 7 must be sleek first, and capable of adding on the stupid things people want, but for me a desktop operating system needs to really perform and not be bloated by crap I will never use. I have XP just about where I want it. Windows 7 needs to start there. -

Microsoft should buy and incorporate Network Magic, my new favorite product. Then they'd have a feature worth crowing about!

@kfp7550 ... you wouldn't happen to be an avid watcher of Family Guy by any chance? lol.
Oh yeah, Windows 7 ... I have traditionally been an early adopter, I tried to give Vista a go but it all seems too intent on being dumbed-down and security conscious and lookin' purdy. That might be a good thing to ease the aging population into the world of computing, but for those of us who just want the dang thing to work, and work quickly, I think transparency of the title bar, and double-checking with me every time i try to install and program or modify a setting is a proper pain in the mouse!
A product branching to suit the two markets (I know it's a gross simplification) would be a good idea as far as I'm concerned. -

Why no...
ShiningWit: Why no, I'm not an avid watcher of Family Guy, whatever that is. I totally made that joke up on the spot. I'm also a fan of 60's-70's music. The Trashmen entertain, not just pick up your garbage... like Windows Vista! OH, SLAM!
Also, ron@... If you're counting ALL versions of Windows, there are more than 9. Windows, Windows 2 (I'm sure there had to be a Windows 2 even though I don't remember it. Why just skip from 1 to 3?), Windows 3.0, Windows 3.1, Windows 3.11, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98SE, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and... Windows 7??? Yeah, right. (If I'm missing any, let me know.) -

I guess we're talking major revisions, so that would be seven by my count:
Windows 1
Windows 2.0
Windows 3.0, 3.1, 3.11, NT3.1, NT3.5, etc
Windows 95, 98, 98SE, Me
Windows 2000, XP
Windows Vista
Windows 7
Windows 1 & 2 both before my time, but like you say, I guess they must have existed! -

RE: Business Hacks Poll: What Do You Think of 'Windows 7'?
I just had to say something after finding some of the clueless comments posted here.
@those who can't count - Windows 7 is part of the NT family, Windows 3, 95, ME, 98 etc are not part of the NT family and so, rather obviously you cannot include them in your count.
@chuck - "One can only hope that they learned their lesson from the disaster that ensued when they tried to build an OS on the cheap, offshore." You do realise how much Vista cost don't you? The most expensive OS development ever, not that this means it is any good though. An OS can still be poor even if you have all the money in the world.
I am writing this on Windows 7 PDC release by the way and so far so good. Normally I run Vista on this laptop (it's what came with it) but 7, even in this VERY early stage seems more responsive. So far so good, let's hope they don't go messing it up when it actually goes to Beta soon and then RTM in around a year.
