RE: Business Hacks Poll: Would You Buy a Netbook?

When I travel even for business I can remotely access my work computer through something like logmein where I can run whatever programs I need to through any browsers. So having something that is nice and small, and easy to travel with is a big plus, even over a smaller laptop.

RE: Business Hacks Poll: Would You Buy a Netbook?

Most computer users are not 6'4" guys with hands that can palm basketballs. Many are like the asian models shown using the netbooks in those asian publicity photos. They have small hands to which a Blackberry or netbook keyboard fits perfectly. My wife, who is 5'6" is a whiz with her blackberry, being able to type as equally fast on it as her regular computer keyboard. She's surprise that I can't work the keyboard like her. I tell her my fingers are bigger and need more room. I'm sure somewhere a major designer of the blackberry is a 5', 100 lbs. whirlwind of a lady to whom the blackberry keyboard is a perfect fit.
My thumb covers at least four keys on the blackberry and I usually hit two keys when typing on it, which means I really don't like sending long emails with my blackberry.
I looked at a netbook and immediately decided that these were made for little people. My eight year old son thinks that these are computers for kids and wonders why any grown-up would be so mean and take them from their children.

I agree with some of the responses. I have a 11.5" notebook and I love it. It is ligh weight and easy to carry, and it fits on the small airline trays. I am use to typing on a blackberry and sidekick style keyboards so an 8" is large. I also have VPN access to my desktop so I don't need the storage. I could carry a smaller one in my purse to meetings and lectures which could eleminate the need for an additional carry on bag.

I know several college students that purchased netbook computers this year. I think these are popular units in the college student market because of size and price-point.

My best friend is my Notebook! Although I don't like to use the communication tools such as the messenger and forums that much.

In fact, the one I'm using right now is Notebook number five. As for desktops, I???m not planning to buy one in the next 20 years. I can???t remember when was the last time I touched it! Maybe that was when I???m still at college three years back.

My whole brain is inside my Notebook, I can't think without it. It reminds me, connects me, secures my data, and archives it for later use.

I believe, Notebooks are the best tools have ever been invented!

It might help if my hands-on netbook experience extended beyond the HP Mini, which was dog-slow running Vista. I'd like to try one with Linux...

I've bought the Asus EEE 1000. It seems to me the perfect balance between portability and usability. As a touch typist, I have no problems cranking out long documents on it's keyboard. I've found it to be rather speedy and I can access my company's VPN with no issues whatsoever. It is so portable that I can carry it anywhere. And with the 40 GB SSD, I've found that I have enough space to carry all my important files with enough space leftover for some MP3's and films. Everyone who's seen my netbook has been jealous of it. It is definitely one of the best purchases I've made in recent years.

Of course I would - and am going to. It won't replace my laptop for when I need to do some serious long-term business travelling. But for day trips, or personal holidays I need internet access + word/powerpoint/excel + and the ability to upload files from my camera and my hard disk camcorder.

Combined with airlines restrictions on weight and a back that's getting older by the day 90% of my trips I estimate can be dealt with by netbook, and still leaves me room to take an actual book to read.

Notebooks are great for portability. Netbooks are even more portable, particularly if you travel frequently and are space challenged. Netbooks particularly appeal to me for travel in my motor home where indeed, I am space and weight challenged. I also like that I can slip a netbook into my briefbag with little or not trouble and much less weight than my notebook. For me the advantages outweight the disadvantages, particularly my usage does not require a great deal of storage or processing power.

So if I'm understanding everybody, you don't mind slow performance, a small screen, and a keyboard that's too small for touch-typing, because the netbook is a pound or two lighter than your average ultralight notebook? I think I'll stick with my iPod touch for on-the-go Web browsing and e-mail and bring along my *notebook* when I need to do actual work.

RE: Business Hacks Poll: Would You Buy a Netbook?

Let's face it, for years we have purchased things we really did not need such as $2,000 dollar Laptops and Desktops systems in which we only play solitare on. Netbooks actually fit what the average computer user really needs, and the prices you cant beat. I think with the way the economy is now people are purchasing what they really need. Also as far as computing power unless you are some kind of graphic designer do you really need a high end laptop?

RE: Business Hacks Poll: Would You Buy a Netbook?

I think netbooks would be DA BOMB if they had much better battery life and at least average performance. But I still maintain that for most users -- business users especially -- a full-fledged laptop is the smarter buy.
