For quick screenshots, I install MWSnap (http://www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/mwsnap.html). It's free, and hasn't been updated since 2002, but I've never run into an issue with it and I've used it since 2004 or so. It's got a very small footprint and loads fast. It doesn't do nice scrolling screenshots or funky edge effects like Snag-It, but usually I don't need that.

It is better than the alternative
On my nice laptop I have to use Function+Alt+Shift+Insert(prt scrn).
I prefer not. -

For me after long install/uninstall of a thousand free soft wares. I found the below are almost a must as they are simple, fast, rational, Do not interfere in your computer and free. They are:
1.Moffsoft FreeCalc:-simple calculations
2.Revo Uninstaller:Great uninstaller tool
3.AusLogics Disk Defrag: for fast simple defragmentation
4.FastStone Capture:for screen capturing
5.FastStone-Image Viewer and editor
6.CCleaner:to clean the computer
7.COWON Media Center-jet Audio
8.E-Text Reader IGT
9.FLVPlayer
10.Kruptos 2 to encrypt sensitive files
11.Paint.NET
12.Screen 2 Exe: to simply capturing a video of your screen
13.VerbAce 2008 v0.73 for Arabic English and English Arabic translator.
You can choose what you thing is required but trying is good

the idea of such a listing is great and thank you for sharing. I wish i could share my opinion onthat point but i don't think my softwar lst would be usefull for you -'cause i'm fronrussian segment of the net.... -_-

I suppose if you're not running Vista then Launchy is a good idea.
But in Vista all I have to do is hit the Windows key, type Exc and enter. Badda-bing, Badda-boom! -
