The Cost of Outsourcing Your Memory

Tech is not advanced enough, yet

Technology is not yet advanced enough to effectively augment meat-memory; particularly in the interface between meat and cyber and the quality of search results.

I feel that lack of onboard memory can degrade the quality (spontaneity, clarity, etc.) of realtime communications, and weakens brain-storming and creative exercises. Until technology advances allow instantaneous, hands-free retrieval of off-brain data, it will be preferable to keep as much as possible in meat memory. The more knowledge you have on-brain, the better armed you are when caught in a battle of wits.

However, I have to admit to keeping my favorite research and reference tools open and handy in tabs for quick reference in phone conversations. In phone discussions, it's a great way to come off as human compendium of all knowledge. Although, to successfully pull off the charade, it's handy to have a phone talent for executing smooth, conversational stalling manuevers...giving homo wikipedian time to pull up the knowledge needed to solve any mystery, or quell in disagreement. -dj
