Poll: Firing Someone Who Doesn't Deserve It?

Well, this one strikes close to home. This has happened to me and the feeling of injustice never seems to wear off. My boss just told me what was going on and I resigned rather than stick around. So I guess let her off the hook. The bigger issue is the firm espouses open and frank communication but only when it is easy. Petty and capricious managerial behavior is corrosive to an organization and the behavior in this vignette is but an example. It was only later, six months, did I hear through the grapevine that my boss disagreed but stood by and let it all progress as it did. Incidentally, my boss'es boss installed a crony to fill my place and my boss was powerless to stop it.

RE: Poll: Firing Someone Who Doesn't Deserve It?

My boss got off the office phone, called me on cell and demanded that I fire the subordinate. I tried making a case for the employee, but was told,"That as far as he was concerned, he was still the boss and he signed the paychecks." I had no other choice, if I chose to keep my job as plant manager, except to fire the employee. I had to do this while the boss was on the phone.

    Business is business.

Firing someone who doesn't deserve it.

In an ideal world, you would speak with your boss regarding their differences with the employee. But most of us don't live in that ideal world. I voted for speaking with the boss, but only in the hopes that I could appeal to the boss's sense of fairplay. If the boss wasn't interested in being fair or just, then it would totally depend on my personal circumstances. If I felt that I had other options, I might resign. If I didn't feel that I had other options, I would probably do what I was told until such time as I could leave such an environment. I have been very fortunate so far that my bosses have been such that they value fairness and I hope I'm never put to the test.

If this person is really valuable to the company, it's important to show that to the boss. If you are the person's supervisor, certainly you have been tracking the person's performance, and can put together a case that will be persuasive.

If the person is really good, he or she will have contributed to the success of your section of the business, and you can make a case for his or her importance to what you are responsible for.

The bottom line is the bottom line, and it is your only valid argument.

RE: Poll: Firing Someone Who Doesn't Deserve It?

I think this is an American Question? Under Australian Industrial Law you must have a valid reason which must stand up in the Industrial Commission (AIRC). As it is a "commission" not a court there is a great deal of flexibility of interpretation, it is not all black letter law. Was the dismissal reasonable, procedurally correct and not a "contructive dismissal" via bullying etc; If there is evidence of any of the above not meeting the expectations of the Commission there is no dismissal. If the boss does not like you, she/he must work out how to fix the problem, after all they are paid to get the best out of employees and they employed you. It forces the right wing managers to think.

I will break down this case to 3 issues. First is Relationship between my subordinate and I, second is relationship between boss and I and third is relationship between my boss and my subodinate. I am considering the third issue is out of my scope as long as I do well for the first and second.
