RE: How to Cope with Annoying Co-workers
I think when bad coworkers crop up, and they do, fight or flight!
Fight = take the situation up with boss then HR if not getting anywhere (which can mean career suicide in some companies - beware!) and cross fingers you eventually DO get the coworker put in his/her place.
Flight = if it is so bad that you cannot escape internally the check your options. Might be a good time to consider alternative careers at alternative companies. In my case - it turned into the best decision I ever made - thank you horrid co-worker! -

RE: How to Cope with Annoying Co-workers
Guess we are luckier in NZ, we still have the same problems with people but there are avenues to save fellow employees sanity through employment law which should be managed by HR (Of course it is dependant upon the skills of the HR person and the will of the management for success). This co-worker is not only annoying but from the small info we have sounds like a bully who has successfully intimidated their co-workers. There is some good information avialable on how to deal with bullies and I suggest looking at that online for assistance if you need. The simple way is to have a few of you lodge a joint complaint with the manager (avoids career suicide when several unite) and get it sorted through HR and with a rider that this person be watched for bullying so that there are no come backs. Being in HR I've dealt with a few of these and it can be done, sometimes through an office "values" policy where the entire office say "This is what we value and what we insist upon as internal behavourial standards in our work place" and everyone signs it off, this type of open peer pressure usually either forces conformity or the lone stirrer to leave, either is usually acceptable. If you can't trust management and HR to achieve this (which would be a shame) then maybe each day you should all pick up all this person's mess and place it in their desk draw (annonymously) until they get the hint, and if they start anything remember bullies can't handle people who stand up to them. Good luck, I hope your HR does it for you.

Is this the reason this particular workspace is videotaped? Someone maybe knew this was going on?
I might have tolerated it as long as it took to amass a nice collection of whatever he's throwing, then deliver it to HR and ask how this is conducive to doing business? Or maybe the boss, is this the current month's "giveaway" and you weren't informed as to proper use?
This qualifies as harassment. -

RE: How to Cope with Annoying Co-workers
Wow, am I the only one that says talk to the annoying co-worker? When this has happened to me I get a mental state prepared...I look at them like they are the 3 year old child that hasn't learned boundries. Then I discuss what problem I'm having with them. "Talking too much, bad mouthing other employees, bragging, etc." All of those things can be handled like butter on a biscuit...smoothly. It's all in your tone and mental state...But let's just say, that goes down hill and your annoying co-worker is extreme!!!
--hide fish in their desk drawer! --Ha! ha!
Seriously, HR should be informed and you should keep a log of verbal attacks or grievances. Be prepared to explain your role in the situation.
