Some additional background...
Someone brought this to my attention and I wanted to add a few comments:
It was our goal to come-up with a "memorable" product name that would be different from the traditionally boring DEC product names usually coined by techies. It was DECs CEO who thought the name was "noisy" and sent the DEC branding police to "help us". It was the SVP of Engineering who offered to let me use his naming "algorithm" (names that end in Works) to come up with the new LinkWorks name (which we "borrowed" from another DEC organization because we were then under significant time pressures).
