Do not under estimate the power of the Web

I would not under-estimate the power of the Internet. The $$ you will invest in your Website can bring an excellent ROI, but you need to spend more than one thousand $.
With a well thought Web site, you could not only bring new customer, but lower the operational costs by simplify the processes or speed up the ordering.
What is more, if this company has a lot of satisfied clients, they could show some testimonials, interact with the clients by using a blog, etc..

    Agree & Disagree

Agreed on underestimating the power of the web (but it can be overestimated too).
Disagree that they "have" to spend more than $1000 - not necessary if they are savvy enough to research what works and self teach how to put one up.

    It's a local business

There's not going to be enough of a customer base to justify "Sales 2.0" interactions. All you'd end up with is a forum with two or three old posts on it.

    Re: It's a Local Business

I'm a little confused about your message- I wasn't referring to web 2.0, just simply that they need to get themselves listed in their local web business directories to help justify the expense/trouble of putting together a simple website and not put any money into marketing.

RE: Invest in Sales Training or Marketing?

Agreed that refining their sales referral process is best for these folks.
If they put together a simple website, they should work to get themselves listed in the local web directories for their services (many are free, just time consuming) - especially if they do not drive traffic to their website via "marketing." This gets them some links and possible referrals who go to the website to check them out and verify they are legitimate.
