    Getting motivated

Regarding training yourself to think positive thoughts, Tony Robbins suggests that you ask yourself positive questions each morning. Not "How come I can't make my numbers?" but rather, "Specifically what three things will I do today that will advance my sales campaigns in the deals I am forecasting to close this quarter?" Not "Why can't I lose any weight?" but rather, "What will I do today to begin to get my weight under control once and for all?" You get the idea.

Apparently people either love or hate Robbins. I attended an 11-hour seminar he ran in 1994 in Chicago. I wanted to see what all the hoopla was about. I went with an open mind.

At one point about seven hours into the thing, Robbins had us picture one thing we always wanted to accomplish, no matter how much it would cost, what people would say, how hard it was, etc. That was easy for me. Then he asked what material thing we would want to own, regardless of cost, etc. That was easy as well.

Eleven months later I owned a Cessna Skylane and had earned an instrument rating. I'm still flying it today--and loving it. I always pictured being in that position, but I got insanely motivated. This stuff really works, but you've got to be in the right state-of-mind and find the right catalyst in a Periu, a Robbins, a mentor, or some other person or event that has a motivating effect on your life.

This is a really good short but to the point listing. Especially about the physical aspects which is often overlooked.

Hi: Great stuff. We spend too much time on the negative. A good friend once said that if we spoke to others the way we sometimes speak to ourselves we
would have no friends. BTW a little error in point 5 -- I assume it should read
"Act with a higher purpose. If it does NOT serve your goal, it???s wasted effort.

    Good stuff, Mr. James.

Folks who scoff at this kind of advice fail to realize that this spiritual and mental conditioning, when practiced enough to become habitual, is what leads to the ACTION - the physical work that produces results.

Unfortunately, too many people try some practicing a success philosophy or methodology and give up when they don't see baleful results after a few weeks. These things take time to take hold - I would estimate one year of daily practice as a minimum.

    Great list

Especially agree with conditioning your mind. That's the hardest one and takes constant work. The ability to keep yourself thinking positive will get you further than anything else.

RE: Ten Ways to Get Insanely Motivated.

All-in-all the usual motivational speeches... Most points are good, however I disagree with one in particular: "Avoid negative people. Don???t take anything that they say seriously." I've found that "negative" people have a keen critical sense of the challenges that must be addressed in any scenario. It's not OK to go down with a sinking ship full of the joys of spring yet blissfully unaware of the fact that a definite drowning will ensue.

During my many years in various capacities as facilitator, colleague and manager I always use the "negative" people as a "sanity-gauge" of any idea being put forth. In the end, it's still my job as a manager, to decide what's best based on the collective input from colleagues.

    Slainte!

    avoid negative people?

There are some people who are habitually negative, and who offer little of use and are a mental and emotional drain on others, and I imagine those are the people the author was referring to. However, many people will read his statement as, avoid anyone who EXPRESSES what might be viewed as negative, anytime and shut them out completely. I totally disagree with that. Essentially that will be read by others to stay happy all the time, never have a thought or word that could be construed as negative, which is not only impractical, but foolish. In college, we sharpened our abilities and our intellect through the critiquing process, which requires critical analysis. In the military, we did after-action reviews, to look at what we did right, and what we could improve on... Neither of these activities could be done without a little critical inspection. It's important to keep a positive outlook, but to disregard anything viewed as "negative" (which is extremely broad) regardless of circumstances, is encouraging ignorance and a head in the sand approach. Sometimes negative critique is called for - when something is broken or can be improved - it has to be analyzed and diagnosed first - that means identifying what is "negatively" affecting performance. Ignoring what needs to be done, simply to maintain a positive appearance is a an activity in suppression of truth (denial) and that is not an effective way of handling issues. But aside from that, that method of handling others breeds intolerance & mistrust that erode teamwork. Motivation should not be attained at someone else's price in my opinion - that is selfish.

I agree 100% with these 10 ways. I am also in the process of marketing a new product. I am so positive that this product will do great once on marketed properly. By reading 10 ways, it encourges me even more. So much more that I look forward seeing $$$$ in millions.

RE: Ten Ways to Get Insanely Motivated.

You are correct in saying don't expect perfection. A very experienced bos of mine once said, "People don't want to pay the extra price for the best solution. They are willing to accept the "adequate" one that meets their needs.

I also had a co-worker who would duct tape the phone receiver to his head when he made cold calls. The act of removing the tape was painful enough to give him the incentive to make many more calls than everyone else.
