salary details?
Why would you provide details of your current or desired salary to a recruiter. The salary discussion is only relevant if both you and the employer like each other, and think the position is a goo\d fit. Until then is doesn't matter how much salary you want.

Salary Details
From the standpoint of good negotiation skills as soon as you reveal your past salary you have locked yourself in to minimum and you will be paid by your new employer according to what your old employer thought you were worth.
Negotiate from what you are worth to the new company and be ready to back it up with demonstrations of your knowledge and experience.
Unless they are willing to divulge what the last peron was being paid in the position you are seeking why should you tell them what you made in your last position? -

Why provide salary details
My experience has been by not providing salary information/preference, you run an additional risk that the recruiter will discard your submittal and move on. I know that to be the case on two occasions involving me.
A corporate recruiter wrote to me and said something like this, "Hello (applicant), you appear to be a good match for the opening with our company. What are your salary requirements?" To which I hedged and expressed a desire for a value for value relationship once I learn more about the challenges and responsibilities of the job and you get to know more about what I bring to the position etc., etc. My response was met with deafening silence.
My subsequent follow-up found an auto-reply message from her e-mail account indicating she would be on vacation. Following the vacation period, she refused to respond to my pleasant and professional inquiries. Apparently she didn't want to hear it. But I suspect she is not atypical though. It happened once again and perhaps a few more times, about which I have no evidence, before I decided to change my approach.
Like most of you, I have been coached to negotiate salary when all the chips are on the table and both sides are comfortable with the match. However, not all companies and recruiters function that way anymore. What should an applicant do when faced with a demand for a specific salary amount-not a range, by a mandatory field in an on-line application? -

RE: Making Your Cover Letter Sparkle
Good article for a brief note on what cover letters do. Could have included a format sample too.
