It's really amazing to see how big the contrast is between these companies and the company that I work for. What puzzles me most is how these companies listed above have come to the way that they are today. Once I know that, then I know where to start a new revoluation of re-organizing.

The contrast between the four cultural models is amazing. These companies are successful because they have found a culture that works for them. While they appear to work well on paper, those who have been there often tell a different story. For example, the GE ranking of employees is not so great for those bottom 10% performers--who might have great potential in a different environment.

The variation from autocratic to democratic is rather amazing. In fact nothing succeeds like success. none theless, these are guide lines which improve your perception. To me, it is all gradual and environment based. keep improving, build teams and never be radical or blind follower.

I think knocking off the bottom 10% is a great
idea. mbherman said those others might have
great potential in a different environment. If
they are cut loose, then they can go find that
other environment! Hopefully they are let go
with some advice on how they can improve and
assistance in finding the right fit. I'm sure
it's not as cold as it sounds in the article! -

I would have to agree with JasonKucheraw. If a company and you don't mesh, it's time to move on because no one benefits from dead weight.
Although I'm sure most of us have worked in organizations that look the other way, or seem to encourage stragglers... There is no logical justification for that because business is business, not charity. -

These things a very beautiful seen from outside. Here are some harsh realities that the article do not show:
1) After years of applying forced ranking, the underperformers have left GE long ago. What determine your appraisal there is how ruthless a cutthroat you are. And, frankly, in most markets I don't see them outperforming the competition -- quite the contrary.
2) A full 100% of the people I know, that work at Google tell me something like this: "They pay me less than I would do in the market and there's no upside potential here. The only reason I'm here is to have a total professional revamp -- I'm sure I'm doing the right thing, but as soon as I finish learning, I'll leave the place".
(I know nothing about Best Buy or the ROWE experience).
3) SEMCO is actually a market laggard. It shoots in all directions and I don't see them leading any industry or segment. There is a couple of other "democratic" corporations in Brazil. One of them is Diarios Associados, which used to be THE country media giant -- something akin to a Time Warner-Viacom-News Corp all rolled into a leviathan of a media group. That was in the 50's and 60's. The founder left Diarios Associados to its managers, in his testament and, after 40 years of "condominium leadership", it is now a sad shadow of what it used to be - a zombie-like, waiting-to-be-dead disconnected bundle of decadent newspapers, radio and TV affiliated (to mediocre networks) stations.
I honestly think these radically alternative models of organizations work only for a short period, under very special circumstances. -

i dont knowmuch about these companies.it's out of personal control. the key is still on the emloyees' hands. one has to be more industrious, more prudent, more rational at work than he is out of work. that's the principle.

I think these systems have worked because they have taken into consideration, consciously or unconsciously, the top of Abraham Maslow's pyramid - self actualisation.
Offices that create the appropriate environment for creativity to flourish most often excel. They may not pay as much, but there are many who would still be attracted to a job there owing to the individual desire for recognition and achievement.
I am so glad that there are companies that think like this. -

I am surprised that only some companies have been shown as utilizing these models. I would have liked to see other examples how these models were used in non-profit organizations, health care companies and smaller companies. Further , what do such companies do in downturns or expansions?

Semco is one of the most interesting companies of the modern century, where there are no time clocks, job titles, security check and receptionists. It is one company where people unanimously decide who their bosses will be, their salary etc. Semco... Semco style (http://en.oboulo.com/) of running business is today recognised as one of the most effective method of management...will suerly inspire many other companies..
