Valuable ideas and takeaways. Especially since most of these are actionable. I've definitely been frustrated managing my remote teams in an organization where few other managers do, so little advice is available.

    Thank you.

    RE: the ideal remote boss

Great article. It would be awesome if all remote managers could be this conscientious! However when managers get too over-loaded themselves (as I'm sure is the case in many companies), these things fall by the wayside in the name of being 'too busy'. As someone who is remotely supervised, I have to admit, I get pretty offended (and you might even say I pout) when my boss doesn't seem to have or want to take the time to say 'hi' on IM. A word to the wise remote manager... Be polite! With so little interaction, little things go a long way, and each encounter carries a lot more weight. The manner in which you handle attempts at small talk (a tool with many uses, one of which is to gauge the mood, humor, etc. of the person you're trying to communicate with) will have an effect on how comfortable your employee feels about asking you for help or bringing up issues. I hate that I feel like such a burden on the rare occasions when I do need to engage my boss!

Spending time with remote workers is vital

Your comments really ring true with me. As the manager of a virtual PR firm, the "face" time with each of my people is very important and, as it turns out, very valuable. Thanks for reinforcing that point.

    Managing Employees in Remote Locations

Having been privileged to manage many internationally remote teams, I completely concur with this excellent article. I would add that having an appreciation, understanding and most importantly empathy with other cultures (both real and company) and languages plays a vital part of successfully managing such teams. There are too many companies who treat their non domestic or non head office teams as inferior because of language or cultural approach differences - a damaging mistake to make when building companies. Communication with a common understanding by all is paramount.

Agreed, excellent article... not just for remote teams

The points brought up for leading a team with mobile staff are excellent, but not just for remote teams. In many respects, as teams grow within large organizations they tend to splinter into subteams that might as well be remote. Within my own group right now, we have a problem in that these key elements of leadership have evaporated. Moreover, any attempts to gently bring the issue of leadership have been met defensively. I am not quite sure how to handle this situation, but if anyone has any advice I would love to hear it. Cheers.

Unleashing the power of remote collaboration & virtual team management

When thinking about factors that distinguish top performing companies, the root of their success often can be traced to the human equation. But how many companies are able to tap more than a fraction of their workforce potential? How many are able to unleash the power of remote collaboration & virtual team management? The companies that find the means to use a larger fraction of their human resources will undoubtedly supersede their competitors. That is their edge in the global economy.

RE: How to Manage Employees in Remote Locations

This topic is really interesting and quite educative.
My personal experience is in support of what is covered in a topic on remote control management. For example lack of communication may deter timely decision making when the team in remote area is facing a certain problem which requires immediate action.
Communicating with the team in a remote area and building a sense of ownership by using "We" plan to achieve an annual sales of USD 2million for example and each one of us will be entitled to a 10% bonus if we actually achieve the target. In a scenario like this, each member in a team will feel that whatever he or she is doing is for his/her betterment and the company at large.
I thank you for the interesting topic and hope to receive more challenging topics from you in the near future.
    Cheers!

    Managing employees in remote locations

Today's business environment is becoming more virtual, so understanding how to manage a remote team is essential to success. I have 5 direct reports located across the country, and even though there are corporate goals the whole company works towards, we have to be sensitive to varying regional client needs. This means flexibility in how we accomplish goals and how we approach our client needs is more important than have a "one plan fits all". Never easy, but always fulfilling. A great article! Another one for my files!

Thank you so much for the very useful information. I have just been given the task of managing remote works who not only will not be on site, but will be working odd shifts which will limit communication. Hopefully using your tips, I can create a good working environment and relationship with these folks that works for us all.

    Hi Author,

This is an excellent atricle and may be eye opener for a whole lot of managers. I myself being a remote employee, I see some of the situations, traits and behaviours reflected in this article and a number of my own thoughts too.
