How to Start a Mentorship Program

Make it Voluntary
Remember, not everyone wants to mentor. And not everyone does it well. Just because someone is senior in the organization, and has a lot of knowledge, does not mean that they will do well teaching this knowledge to others.
It takes a certain amount of skill to be a mentor. Along with a desire to guide someone. An employee who gets his kicks from his job, and is suddenly saddled with a 'mentee' will not do well. -

RE: How to Start a Mentorship Program
Sometimes you find when you pair seniors with juniors they dont want to share all their knowledge because some of them are afraid that the mentee will strive for the seniors position. This happens a lt in South African companies because of the rate of unemploymnet being so high

RE: How to Start a Mentorship Program
This is essential to keep a company strong!
All managers should be involved in the program, it is an obligation for a manager to get the competency to transfer his work knowledge and experiences to the newcomers. I remember when i started my professional life, i worked in a company where all experienced managers had to give training cessions to the young or new comers and participate on the full program. Today, nearly all training is given by outside or internal experts!! This is in my view a mistake!! -

Two more resources that are useful:
1) mentoring.org
2) check your state's local SHRM chapter and they have resources for creating a mentor program - good for recruiting but also great outline for developing an internal program. -

RE: How to Start a Mentorship Program
In the words of the "HARVARD REVIEW":
"Everyone who makes it has a MENTOR"
Highly successful people hardly ever make it on their own. They succeed because they enlist the help of the experienced people who can lead them and guide them every step of the way-people to whom they can turn for counsel, for motivation, for key techniques and strategies that minimize risk and maximize success... -

RE: How to Start a Mentorship Program
While its unproductive to micro manage the mentor-mentee relationship, it?s important to have a robust methodology to track the effectiveness of the program. An online tool to document, schedule and alert stakeholders will ensure that such initiatives become part of the business culture.

I work for an international IT and comms business of
100K employees. They mandated that managers must
mentor allotted groups of people. It was so successful
that two years later it was scrapped. -

What are you trying to say. That the program was
actually successful or sarcastically that the program was
a failure? -

RE: How to Start a Mentorship Program
Mentoring has become a strategic learning activity, both for the mentor and the mentee. But how to make sure that you have what it takes be a good mentor?

RE: How to Start a Mentorship Program
Mentoring is great for junior sales people. The faster a new sales person can find a good mentor the better. Also great for sales people transitioning into sales management!

RE: How to Start a Mentorship Program
I am at present working on development of A players in my company. I was thinking if mentoring can also be made a part of this program.
