21st Century Communication
I'm thrilled to see that many companies are acknowledging the need for redesign in the workplace. Thus allowing for the team and collaborative communication style of 21st Century Communicators.

Architecture that encourages collaboration
This article reminded me of a video where Verne Harnish describes IBM's research campus architecture - lots of nooks for impromptu hallway meetings, whiteboards everywhere, lots of intersecting walkways among the different campus headquarters (so people with diverse academic disciplines could "cross-pollinate"). The video can be found here: http://www.mindperk.com/Harnish.htm

RE: Three New Designs for Optimizing Collaboration
Sounds like a good way to sell smaller cubicles and less privacy. Facilitating collaboration is great, but constant interruptions and movement in your field of view is bound to be distracting. For someone doing programming or work that requires long periods of concentration, this could be an issue.

RE: Three New Designs for Optimizing Collaboration
Physical space is only part of the 'incentive' for people to collaborate. A great deal more is about leadership and the type of culture that people in leadership roles promote. I'm not referring to what they say about collaborating, but the type of interation that they promote through their efforts (or lack thereof) to collaborate with their peers/colleagues. If you do not get a handle on individual excessive egos within teams or the ego of the team leader, collaboration will never, never survive and certainly not thrive.

RE: Three New Designs for Optimizing Collaboration
Great looking work.
As an Architect who works in a rehabilitated former brick brewery filled with creative office spaces - I can't say enough about how important workplace design is. After 6 years of working in this building it still feels new and exciting to work in a restored, renovated, creative, and fun office space.
Good office space design is an investment in the most important asset a business has - it's people. Quality of workplace gives employees incentive to do more, to do better. They sense the investment the employer has made and employees excel.
Great work!

RE: Three New Designs for Optimizing Collaboration
Sounds like shrinking workspace promotes productivity from this article. Hmm...
I am glad I am still working in one of those old thinking companies... I like my
office where I can close the door to my colleague's family problems... and
actually spend the time doing the work I am paid to do!
After "hoteling" into cubicles in different cities/offices/countries... I am glad to
be home to an OFFICE with a door. I prefer to work in a quieter environment
where I can CONCENTRATE and finish my work instead of having to do my work
after everyone has left, or work from home to get that peace to finish my
thought/work. -

RE: Three New Designs for Optimizing Collaboration
It depends on the enviroment. Unfortunately one size does not fit all!
I would agree though that for creative and positive working environments there is a need to have light and space. -
