RE: How to Take Parental Leave
Cool info, it wasn't that long ago that our kids were born (seems like just the other day
While I probably could have taken a lot of unpaid leave, I never took more than a week off because our sick leave policy couldn't be used for more than that, and vacation time was hard to come by(and goodness knows we needed the cash that working provided). -

Another idea for senior managers who plan to take time off to have a baby: sufficiently intimidate all of your subordinates before you leave. Make sure they know you are The Boss, even when your mind and thoughts are elsewhere. That way they will all be scared to make any meaningful decisions in your absence -- including those which might garner praise or even advancement. As a result, things will soon be a real mess, paving the way for your triumphal return.

RE: How to Take Parental Leave
Great article.I took six months off to have a baby (combo of annual, maternity & unpaid leave) & agree with your tips eg not using pregnancy as an excuse not to work hard and do my job well. I had had surgery in the first month of my pregnancy (which was incidentally my first month in the job!)and spent a month at home recuperating but when I recovered & returned, I made my presence felt.It built goodwill for me such that my boss still agreed to my taking 6months.The idea of phasing the return is great.Since I relocated, I'll use that tip for my next job and baby. Thanks!
