Interesting! We've been using allpointsfeedback.com for our 360's. Its tough to do without a good piece of software.

    RE: Conducting a 360-degree Appraisal

Part of my role as a corporate communications manager was the development of an online 360 communications assessment tool. Our tool followed many of the recommendations presented here and was a success because of its ability to provide managers with a picture of their perceived communication skills. Though it was not mandatory, many managers used the opportunity to improve their skills over time.

The benefit added to our tool was a site where managers could pull information and resources related to the areas where they were perceived to be the weakest (e.g. "communicating change" or "giving feedback").

I feel the 360 feedback process has many merits and should be conducted by any business environment looking to become a world-class organization.

    RE: Conducting a 360-degree Appraisal

During my whole career this has taken place for me only once - regrettably. Since this form of feedback is really very useful, and gives a much more accurate idea what to improve and where. However, it is equally difficult to conduct, is laborous, and requires also time from those not being appraised.

    RE: Conducting a 360-degree Appraisal

Whilst working our clients deploying our online 360 appraisal tool which addresses many of the above areas and more. One of the major elements which receives positive feedback is the Forced Distribution Method, where assessors have to assign relative weakness and strengths, this then drives non confrontational valuable debate/discussion about why different people see different strength and weaknesses from different roles and organizational perspectives.

I would be interested in others views of the value of Forced Distribution Method when completing a 360.

    RE: Conducting a 360-degree Appraisal

Thanks for the shout, here at www.reactive360.com we have been helping people conduct 360 degree feedback reviews for a while now, the main reasons for failure are organisational culture, if the culture of the organisation is so rigid it wont change then 360 feedback will be lost, another reason is you need someone in the company to champion the process and take it on as their 'pet' project, other obvious reasons can be costs as it can quite expensive for large companies, for this reason we have introduced our free version to use, take a look if your interested at: http://www.reactive360.com
