Photos: Apple unveils new iMacs, apps

CEO Steve Jobs shows off new iMacs and updates to Apple's multimedia and productivity software Tuesday. Three new iMacs were unveiled at an event held Tuesday at Apple''s Cupertino, Calif., headquarters. There will be two 20-inch iMacs with different specifications, and a more expensive 24-inch model. The 20-inch systems will cost $1,199 or $1,499, depending on the configuration, and the 24-inch system will cost $1,799, $200 less than the current 24-inch iMac.:Apple is also introducing a new thin keyboard along with the new iMacs. The new keyboard has audio and video controls at the top, and is available in either wired or wireless versions.
Current Mac users who want to use the new keyboard with an older iMac or Mac Pro can buy the wired version for $49 and the wireless Bluetooth version for $79. Batteries are included with the wireless version.:A look at the multiple input and output jacks on Apple''s new iMacs. Jobs said it was the first time ever Apple had put the FireWire 800 jack on an iMac.:Jobs also introduced a major revision to iLife, the company''s suite of home media software. The new version, iLife ''08, will cost $79 and come with new versions of iPhoto, iMovie, iWeb, iDVD and GarageBand, the five applications in the iLife suite.:iPhoto ''08 will come with the ability to upload photos to a new set of .Mac services, so home photographers can build Web pages with their photos. It also incorporates a new feature called "skimming," which lets iPhoto users preview images in an album without having to open the album itself.:The most significant upgrade to the iLife suite was to the iMovie application, which changed so much the company decided to give it a new icon, Jobs said. Mac users can create short movies of their home videos with iMovie, but before this new version came out, it was very hard to create a short movie in a short amount of time, he said. The new version lets users drag and drop video clips into a movie template, where transitions and a soundtrack can be added.:The new version of GarageBand lets you create a customized background track for your vocals or instrumental prowess using several different templates, such as rock, blues, jazz, Latin, or reggae.:In a rare move, Apple executives (from left to right) Tim Cook, chief operating officer; Jobs; and Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing, took questions from the press and analysts assembled in Cupertino.:The new iMacs are made from aluminum and glass, a combination of materials that Apple previously reserved for its professional line of products but that has impressed lots of regular folks, Jobs said.
Apple had several iMacs on display after the presentation, and they should be available in Apple stores and on the Web now. Apple hadn''t updated the iMac''s design in several years, and it also took the occasion to insert Intel''s latest Core 2 Duo processors into the new systems.:A detailed look at the specifications of the new iMacs. Jobs said that, although Apple''s Mac business is two-thirds notebooks these days, iMacs will remain the Mac system of choice for people who need large displays. "I haven''t seen anybody request a 24-inch laptop yet," he quipped.

Photos: IBM lifts lid on Web 2.0 tech

Go behind the scenes at Big Blue's U.K. research lab to see what's up with projects like DIY Shopper and QEDwiki.IBM has been showing off some of the tech at its research and development labs at Hursley, near Winchester, England. Silicon.com popped over to take a look at, among other things, a mashup wiki, IBM''s version of Second Life and a Web 2.0 retail application.

Above is the Hursley House, the stately home in which IBM''s U.K. R&D operations are based. The Spitfire engine--used in the famous World War II aircraft--was developed here by a previous occupant, Vickers.
: This is the homepage for DIY Shopper--a concept retail Web site developed with retail group Kingfisher that uses Web 2.0 concepts such as blogs and buddy lists. The page shows a list of items for a DIY project as well as buddy lists of in-store advisors and people doing similar projects, who can share their experiences. The system also interacts with Second Life and provides users with in-store mobile services.:Here, a shopper''s avatar helps show how the materials from the Web site appear when used in Second Life. Shoppers can look at the different materials that they''re considering for their project and decide what items will be most appropriate to buy. During the selection process they can also talk to other shoppers or in-store staff using their avatars.:The DIY Shopper system also works through customers'' mobile phones and tablet PCs that can be used by shop staff. For example, when shoppers walk into a store, they could receive a money-off voucher via a bar code sent to their mobile. The shop staff could use the tablet PCs to access DIY Shopper from anywhere in the store and communicate with shoppers to meet them to or give advice.:DIY Shopper can also work over mobile phone by using in-store Bluetooth connectivity. This text message acknowledges that the user has made a request for advice on garden plants and informs the user where to meet a shop assistant for further help.:Developers at Hursley have create an internal IBM virtual world called Metaverse. The development team licensed code from the makers of a game called Torque to use as the basis for Metaverse. The idea is for IBM workers to use the virtual world to communicate with each other and share ideas. People can hold virtual meetings, and areas are dedicated to individual departments and projects.:This is QEDwiki, a browser-based platform for developing mashups. This particular demo shows how a shipping company could combine various applications to create a mashup. By taking information from various databases, QEDwiki gives the freight company an application to use to locate ships, see what the weather is like in the vicinity of the different vessels and even monitor pirate activity in the region. The vessel shown is traveling just off the coast of Washington state in the U.S.:This shows the same ship off the west coast of the U.S. but this time, the map shows the weather conditions in the area surrounding the ship. The mashup can also access piracy reports in the local area and locate incidents on the map so ship crews can be vigilant for attacks.:Back in Second Life, IBM shows off its SmartBank system on its company island. The technology simulates a high-volume banking environment that is designed to show how ATM banking channels could be used in Second Life. The virtual ATM is linked to a real payments system running over IBM software being used to simulate withdrawals from a core banking system model.
