Research In Motion (RIM) is hoping a new deal with Adobe will help distinguish its BlackBerry from rival smartphones and enable developers to create more interesting apps for the device. There are currently about 100,000 iPhone apps, but only a few thousand BlackBerry apps.
The pair plan to build on their previously announced goal of bringing Flash to the BlackBerry and hope to use Adobe's Creative Suite for images, graphics and videos. RIM also hopes to introduce push technologies to the device, allowing apps to send emails and alerts to users. It also aims to make app creation more lucrative for developers by letting them sell extra content.
The partnership is likely to make the BlackBerry a stronger rival to the iPhone, which does not support Flash.
