Yahoo! claims it is ?displacing? Google by entering into a multi-year contract to put its search engine on handsets operated by O2 Germany. The deal will allow users to access the Yahoo! search engine from O2 handsets and to synchronise their PC and mobile homepages. Users will also get links to Yahoo! features including Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! News and Flickr.
The search engine reportedly convinced O2 Germany of the merits of a partnership by emphasising its success with O2 UK. The UK deal encouraged O2 customers to stay on O2's mobile portal for longer, Yahoo! claims.
Some counter that the news will not worry Google, which commands 70% of the mobile search market in Germany, while Yahoo! has a mere 8.2%.
