US music download service Qtrax is set to boost its user figures by teaming up with Chinese search giant Baidu. The agreement will allow Chinese music-related searches to be directed to Qtrax’s free and legal download site. Qtrax allows users to download songs to their PCs for free and later move them to a portable device.

Baidu dominates the Chinese search market with a 64% share, according to Credit Suisse analyst Wallace Cheung. However, Baidu faces competition from Google. Both search engines have signed deals with the four major record labels, EMI, Sony Music, Warner Music Group and Universal Music.

Earlier this year, the China Internet Network Information Centre claimed China had 338m internet users, making it the largest internet population in the world.
