BSkyB is integrating its video-on-demand (VoD) service into Microsoft’s Windows Media Centre. The deal means Sky’s service will come as part of the multimedia playback suite included in new versions of the recently released Windows 7 operating system.
The subscription service will launch before the end of the year, says Sky. Premium Sky package subscribers will gain access to the VoD service for free. Non-Sky customers will need to buy a package, but will not need to install a satellite dish.
Only standard definition images will be available initially, but both Sky and Microsoft say they will work to include HD programming as soon as it is possible to offer a stable service.
The News Corp-owned broadcaster is set to launch its VoD platform on Microsoft’s Xbox later this month. Both projects are part of Sky’s efforts to hit 10m subscribers by 2010. This week Sky recorded a 40% increase in profits to GBP180m (USD296m).
