Cisco Systems is continuing its aggressive acquisitions policy with the purchase of wireless data technology firm Starent Networks. The USD2.9bn deal comes just two weeks after the network infrastructure giant bought video-conferencing specialists Tandberg for USD3bn.
The acquisition will help Cisco capitalise on growing demand for wireless data services, driven in part by the expanding smartphone market. Some of the technology Cisco sells to telecoms firms is complementary to Starent’s wireless data management products. Combining the two firms’ operations may enable them to offer more appealing packages.
