IBM will pay USD1.2bn to acquire SSPS. SSPS provides predictive analysis software, helping companies to predict market conditions. IBM plans to add SPSS's operations to its Information on Demand software unit.

The acquisition is consistent with IBM's plans to become a provider of high-margin software and services software. It has acquired 27 companies in the business intelligence and analytics industry so far.

SPSS has a high profile client list that includes Credit Suisse, BT, New York University and HSBC Bank USA. The market for business analytics software is expected to grow 4% to USD 25bn.

IBM will acquire Wilshire from Bank of America but is declining to disclose the terms of the deal.
