Adobe is buying web analytics firm Omniture for USD1.8bn as the firm looks to offset declining sales of its web software with new revenue streams. Uptake of Adobe’s software, which includes Photoshop and Acrobat, has suffered during the economic recession as customers failed to upgrade older versions of its programmes, instead looking to powerful free apps. Adobe is reporting a 30% year-on-year drop in income to USD136m for the quarter ended August, and a 21% fall in revenue.
Omniture, in comparison, has fared well during the recession, with the company expected to announce an 18% year-on-year increase in earnings for Q3. The firm charges customers fees based on analysis of monthly website traffic, so sales are less sensitive to economic shifts.
The acquisition will enable Adobe to offer a complete set of tools for website production, allowing its customers to design, build, publish and monitor websites within a single system. ?We’re combining art with science,? says senior VP Paul Weiskopf. ?We’ve streamlined the process for creating and delivering content, and now we’re offering the ability to put it in front of the right user at the right time to get the optimised business result.?
