The US government is launching a pilot programme which will allow members of the public to log into participating government agency websites using their login details from other independent websites. The open initiative will use OpenID and Information Card technologies to let people sign onto government sites using accounts from organisations including Google, Yahoo! and PayPal.

The programme is the first phase of a public consultation on the idea of open government, which aims to apply the social networking and integration of advantages of web 2.0 to the practice of government. The project hopes that a more open system will allow US citizens to more easily provide input on public policy and access their own tax and Social Security records.
