Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is paying Powerchip Semiconductor an estimated USD21.3m for a 9.7% stake in Neo Solar Power. The acquisition follows news from earlier this month that TSMC's board has given approval to invest USD50m in social energy.

Neo Solar, also based in Taiwan, makes polysilicon photovoltaic solar cells. It claims its SuperCell product achieves a conversion efficiency of 16.8%. The firm buys its silicon wafers from companies such as REC.
