Telefonica’s O2 and Movistar units have signed a deal with Palm that will see them become the exclusive carriers for the Pre smartphone in the UK, Ireland, Germany and Spain. Palm says the Pre will be available in these countries by Christmas, but is yet to announce its pricing scheme.

The Pre went on sale in the US in June, initially with operator Sprint, and has received largely favourable reviews. However, it looks unlikely that the phone will meet the forecasts of some analysts and shift 1m units in its first quarter. New data from JNK wireless consultant iGR says a number of Sprint stores are reporting a drop-off in sales of the Pre. Only 8% of the 50 stores questioned had sold out of the Pre last week, compared to 38% in the first week after the phone’s release.
