Bookseller Borders is pairing up with Elonex to launch its own e-book reader in the UK. The device costs GBP189 (USD305) and comes preloaded with 100 free e-books, including texts by Shakespeare, Austen and Dickens.
Borders hopes to rival the Sony Reader, which launched in partnership with Waterstones last September and has sold more than 30,000 units. Sony is currently the only UK competitor, although analysts predict that Amazon will launch its Kindle e-reader in the UK by the end of 2009.
Around 1,000 of Elonex's e-book readers will be on sale exclusively in Borders stores this week, and the devices will be available through the website from next week. Some 45,000 e-books will be available to buy on the Borders website.
