The rumour that Yahoo! may sell HotJobs appears not to have deterred newspapers from joining its consortium, with Yahoo! now announcing five new additions to the scheme. All of the new members are thought to be keen to access Yahoo!’s targeted database and ad assistance, but not the job listings.

Launched in 2006 with 176 newspapers, the scheme originally connected members with Yahoo!’s HotJobs search engine. The scheme has now grown to include search and content (and in September, Yahoo’s new display ad platform APT), meaning newspapers can offer more appealing deals to advertisers and therefore sell more ad space. The consortium now has 814 members, accounting for 51% of US Sunday newspaper circulation.

Estimates suggest the consortium has sold ads worth USD50m to date, and contributed to a 30% gain in online ad revenues in Q1 2009, at a time when most newspapers are struggling with online ad sales.
