North Carolina-based energy firm Duke Energy is partnering with Cisco Systems to accelerate smart grid development. Cisco will develop a two-way digital communications infrastructure based on internet protocol-based open standards. These open standards will enable the emerging technology to be easily integrated in the coming years. The pair will also work together to develop and install residential energy management devices.
?Replacing our analogue electric grid with advanced digital technology to create a 21st century electricity delivery system largely involves data, networks and communications – all of it Cisco’s expertise,? says Duke Energy’s SVP for smart grid and customer systems, Todd Arnold.
Duke Energy serves 11m customers spread over five states. The firm is investing USD1bn for smart grid upgrades in Indiana and Ohio, where it plans to deploy more than 700,000 smart meters over the next five years. Duke is seeking approval to install around 800,000 smart meters in Indiana.
