Vevo, the music video joint venture between Universal and YouTube, is in talks with a consortium of independent records labels, A2IM, to bring additional music content to the site. A deal would be a crucial boost to the Vevo project, which is trying to establish itself as a key online platform for the music industry. The reports follow news from earlier this month that Sony is joining the Vevo project.
Digital Music News this week reported that A2IM had signed a deal with Vevo. A2IM president Richard Bengloff has since denied that the deal is closed. However, he confirms that A2IM is negotiating an agreement ?on par with those of the majors?.
Though A2IM’s combined catalogue is scarcely as valuable as those of Universal or Sony, the prospect of garnering cross-industry support for the Vevo project will be warmly received by participating labels and by YouTube.
A2IM is a consortium of 225 independent record labels that includes imprints such as Anticon, Roadrunner Records and System Recordings.
